Where is Shimotsukata?
Shimotsukata is a small mountain district in Nichinan City, in the southernmost part of Miyazaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. It sits inland from the Pacific coast — a landscape of steep hillsides, terraced rice paddies, clear streams, and cedar forest that stretches as far as you can see.
The nearest airport is Miyazaki Airport, about 60 kilometres away. From there, a winding road through the hills leads you here — and when you arrive, the air is noticeably different.
The land
Shimotsukata is a place shaped by altitude, rainfall, and time. The hillsides catch the warm humid air rolling in from the Pacific, creating conditions that are mild in winter and lush through summer. Terraced fields have been cut into the slopes by hand over generations — rice, vegetables, and more recently, lemons.
At the heart of the district stands a cedar tree more than 400 years old. It was struck by lightning some years ago. It survived. For us, it has become a symbol of everything Shimotsukata is: old, rooted, a little scarred, and still here.
The numbers — honestly
We do not hide what Shimotsukata is facing. Population has been declining for decades. Around 60% of residents are elderly. The school closed long ago. On paper, this village should not have a future.
But in 2020, eighteen neighbours decided to form the Shimotsukata Furusato Ōentai — a community organisation to take on, together, what none of them could manage alone. Agricultural land maintenance. Local food production. A community gathering space. And the belief that a village of 139 people is still worth fighting for.

What's growing here
Shimotsukata is not a tourist destination in the conventional sense. There is no resort, no gift shop, no convenience store. What there is: a hillside full of lemon trees, a cedar forest with a story, a group of people making things with their hands, and a fire lit every Saturday night.
